The average human takes 15 minutes to fall asleep. This calculator accounts for this time, ensuring you complete full sleep cycles and wake up at the right moment.
A good night consists of 5–6 complete sleep cycles. Each cycle lasts ~90 minutes, progressing through light, deep, and REM sleep stages.
Waking between cycles leaves you feeling refreshed. Waking mid-cycle causes sleep inertia — that heavy, groggy feeling that ruins your morning.
It's better to complete a full cycle than sleep longer and wake mid-cycle. Well-timed sleep of 7.5 h often beats poorly-timed 8+ hours.
The calculator uses the science of 90-minute sleep cycles. By working backward from your desired wake-up time (or forward from your current time), it identifies optimal times to fall asleep so you complete full cycles and wake feeling refreshed — not groggy.
Most adults need 5–6 complete sleep cycles (7.5–9 hours). Four complete cycles (about 6 hours) can still leave you reasonably rested. Fewer than 4 cycles consistently is not recommended for long-term health.
Waking during a deep sleep stage causes sleep inertia — the grogginess and disorientation you feel. Even with 8 hours, if your alarm interrupts a deep cycle, you'll feel worse than waking after 7.5 hours at the end of a complete cycle.
The 90-minute cycle is an average. Individual cycles can range from 70 to 120 minutes. Age, health, sleep quality, and lifestyle all influence cycle length. Use the "Time to fall asleep" slider to fine-tune results for your personal sleep pattern.
